Canoeing In Beccles

I think the year must have been 1982, so I was nine or so at the time. My family were visiting Roger and the gang at the house in Beccles. After lunch we went canoeing on the river. I hadn’t been canoeing before, but Roger put me in the one-man vessel and assured me that it was as stable as an oil tanker. I paddled out, but seconds later I found myself upside down in the cold, and somewhat murky water. Roger and the boys pulled me out and as I stood on the bank, dripping and shivering Roger said “There you go, now you know how to do a capsize”! He was always smiling and positive. He saw the upside in everything (even an upside down canoe) and always wanted to impart his knowledge and help people. He will be deeply missed.
